Cooperation in a City leads to opportunity for young people. This may be a Summer like no other in the City of Buffalo, New York. Buff City Hoops is just one of many groups that has acted like a fishing net in attracting like-minded community groups whose goal is to create a better life for the young people of our City. Murray Holman is the President of the Stop The Violence Coalition. Their activities are too numerous to mention. On Monday, August 10, 2015, Murray's team showed up at Schiller Park to put on a basketball and life skills program for youngsters. BWAP - Brothers With A Purpose
9MLD - 9 Minute Life Direction for Halftime (or anytime) A BWAP Teaching About RACE Basketball is a gateway to character development in young people. At each BWAP Basketball Event we dedicate 9 minutes to teaching a basketball skill, character development, life direction and prayer. Each 9MLD will begin with the Weekly Keyword that leads into the message. After 9 minutes, the group will end the halftime huddle with a prayer. If you have any questions please call Bob Kuebler at 716-830-8240 or email [email protected] 9MD3 Weekly Keyword - RACE RACE can be defined as: "a competition, to run fast, a narrow channel of water a group of people (the human race,) RACE in Basketball - Let's use the word "RACE" as an acronym that describes the habits of a great point guard. "R" is for race. A great point guard will race down the court before the defense has time to set up, (unless you need to burn up the clock!) A point guard will look for the fast break first, before he or she settles into a set offense. The "A" in race stands for assist. A point guard's most important skill is probably the ability to know when to pass or not to pass. The point guard is the quarterback who directs the team or better yet, he is the assistant to the coach who's actually in the game. The "C" in race stands for commitment. A tendency among ballplayers is to be the star and attract attention to their skills. A point guard must first be committed to the team. You must be a committed team player to win championships. The "E" in race is emotions. The point guard has to remain in control of her emotions. Control is the key, don't throw the ball away and don't throw your skills away because you lost your poise and focus. Race in Character – The human race was created inequality. Blood has always been the same color in every human being in the whole human race. Scientists will tell you that over 99% of the population contains the same bases of DNA. Racism was created through the ignorance of man in his struggle for power. Ethnic cleansing, slavery, terrorism, sex trafficking, and discrimination are all forms of unfairness, injustice, and bigotry. What is Racism? − There is only one race - the human race. All human beings share the same basic DNA. We all share the same emotions and intelligence. We are all equal in every way. Fear-based hunger for power has created an ignorance called superiority. Racism is the plurality of ignorance and encompasses all forms of bigotry and hypocrisy. Just for the record, all of that ignorance was laid to rest at the Cross. Jesus died to pay the price for racism - unfortunately the human race continually resurrects hypocrisy. Race in Life – "Starting from scratch, he made the entire human race and made the earth hospitable, with plenty of time and space for living so we could seek after God, and not just grope around in the dark but actually find him. He doesn’t play hide-and-seek with us. He’s not remote; he’s near. We live and move in him, can’t get away from him! One of your poets said it well: ‘We’re the God-created.’ Well, if we are the God-created, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to think we could hire a sculptor to chisel a god out of stone for us, does it?" BUFF CITY HOOPS
9 Minute Directions for Halftime Session 2 - EXCELLENCE Basketball is a gateway to character development in young people. At each Buff City Hoops game, 9 minutes will be devoted to teaching a basketball skill, character development, life direction and prayer. Each 9MD will begin with the Weekly Keyword that leads into the message. Each site will provide the 9MD Leader who can be anyone they trust to set a good example for the young folks. After 9 minutes, the group will end the halftime huddle with a prayer. If you have any questions please call Bob Kuebler at 716-830-8240 or email [email protected] 9MD2 - Weekly Keyword - EXCELLENCE Excellence - "The quality of being outstanding or really good." Excellence in basketball - A basketball player who strives for excellence strives to take his best shot. All shooters have a sweet shot. That’s the shot that is their best shot and they make it a high percentage of the time. A player who is good will take whatever shot the defense gives him. A player who excels will work hard to create room to be able to take his best shot. Don’t settle for less than excellence, work hard to be your best. Play basketball with excellence. Excellence in Character – It’s easy to hang out with the crowd and do what the crowd does – whether it’s right or wrong. A person with excellence in character makes the right decision and does what is right in the face of peer pressure that says to do the wrong thing. Stealing is wrong. Hurting people is wrong. Judging people by the color of their skin is wrong. People of excellent character treat all people as equals. Excellence in Life – “Because of this Daniel became distinguished above all the other high officials and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him. And the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.” Daniel 6:3 The Bible. I encourage you to look up the life story of Daniel. He was once thrown into a lions den because some wicked folks wanted him dead and out of the way. They wanted to gain leadership by killing him. Yes, you can kill somebody to gain leadership, but it doesn’t last and eventually nobody respects you. Doing your best to help other people become excellent will help you gain leadership positions in basketball and life. Thanks for your time. Go do something nice for somebody. Jesus loves you and so do we. If you have any questions please call Bob Kuebler at 716-830-8240 or email [email protected] 9MD1 Weekly Keyword - INTEGRITY Integrity - solid character, honest, your word is good, you do what you say what you will do, you are a team player, you promote unity, you do what is right. Integrity in basketball - A basketball player with integrity always puts the team first. He doesn't yell at a player who threw the ball away or missed a shot. A player with integrity always plays his best and helps teammates play up to their potential. A player with integrity does not cheat or make up their own rules. A player with integrity is honest about their own skills and works hard to improve to be the best that they can be. Integrity in Character - If the ball goes out of bounds and you touched it last, but the referee never saw you touch the ball and awards your team the ball, what should you do? Do you admit to the ref that you touched the ball last? That's what a person with integrity would do - they would be honest. If people see you lie in one area of your life, then they will believe that you will lie about other things. They will believe you to be a liar. People with integrity are solid folks who tell the truth. Integrity in Life - "Likewise, encourage the young men to be sensible about everything. Set an example of good works yourself, with integrity and dignity in your teaching. Your message is to be sound beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be ashamed, having nothing bad to say about us." That comes from the Book of Titus 2:6-8 in the Bible. Sometimes people will lie about you to get you into trouble. Guys with integrity simply tell the truth without retaliation. Why? Everything in life comes full circle - "How you treat others is how they will treat you." Jesus was accused by many folks who lied about him. He died after saying these words: "Father forgive them, them don't know what their doing." Guys with integrity make mistakes and forgive other guys who make mistakes. Thanks for your time.
