BWAP XXXVI - EDDIE LEWIS GIVES YOUNG MEN A PROVERB ABOUT ANGER

1/29/2016

Bible verses read by young a young man tend to catch the attention of other young men. That's exactly what happened at BWAP XXXVI on Thursday, January 28, 2016. Eddie Lewis took time out from playing basketball to deliver this week's 9MD. If you're not familiar with what a 9MD is, then read on!
When young men respect the message of their peers, something powerful happens and we call it positive life change. For 9 minutes, Eddie talked about anger to his peers. He read Bible verses from his smart phone. Here's a couple of pieces of wisdom for people of any age; Proverbs 15:1 "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." Proverb 15:18 "A hot temper stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel." A 9MD is a 9 minute Life Direction/Devotion that gives some practical life wisdom to young men. Each Thursday at BWAP, 40-50 inner-city young men between the ages of 18-30 play ball hear a 9MD and eat a home-style meal as we build life-changing relationships.
Anger wells up in all of us sometimes and can be positive or negative. We find that young men who grow up without a father carry lots of anger and they don't know why. Feeling an emptiness and longing for a father's love that's never been experienced, they fill the void with anger. We know that expressing the Father's love through our actions of patience helps young men release their anger through God's love.
Patience is something that we all need but few understand what it is until we get a few years into our adulthood. AT YWAP we expect that to need patience as young men grow into maturity and patience through our programs. God gives liberally to those who ask and we have patience! Young men like Eddie Lewis help demonstrate what patience is. He's 24 yrs. old and comes to Buffalo from Alabama. Eddie has worked with the YWAP Team as a YWAP Coach/Mentor in a Buffalo School. Building relationships with over 50 middle school students, those young people grew in respect for Eddie and each other. Eddie also works a full time job, is a dad and goes to a Bible study each week. We believe Eddie represents the "new-normal" for inner-city young men 18-30 yrs. old. Eddie Lewis gave a great message filled with wisdom for a healthy life. Thanks for who you are Eddie, Jesus loves you and so do we. #JLYASDW

DEMERIS JOHNSON & BWAP XXXV DESTINY

1/23/2016

Believe in yourself. That would be only one short phrase describing the impact of Pastor Demeris Johnson's 9 Minute Devotion at BWAP XXXV. In a short 9 Minutes. Demeris gave the 18-30 yr. old inner-city young men a life time worth of wisdom.
Without the guidance of a father or adult male role model, many guys grow up angry. They're unaware of why they're angry, they just feel an empty void. Pastor Demeris became a father figure to the young men at BWAP. He urged all of the young men to use the gift that God gave them to achieve the kind of life that God intended them to have. The former NFL star who played for the Buffalo Bills shared his story as an over-comer. Life is not meant to be free of struggle.
Authority figures to young men may be intimidating and cause resentment. Pastor Demeris represented authority and compassion. The young men identified with his personal story and were energized by his passion.
Perhaps the greatest example of who Pastor Demeris is would come form a testimony from another NFL Player. Jeremy Kelley who is with Indianapolis Colts has a fond remembrance of Demeris. Here is a quote taken from
http://www.nflplayerengagement.com/news-and-media/faith-family-football/articles/jeremy-kelley/

"PE: What does being a father mean to you?

Kelley:
Growing up not having a father around didn't bother me much because I never knew what it was like to have him there. Luckily, there was a man that came into my life and filled that void and showed me what a father was. His name is Demeris Johnson and he was my best friend’s father.

Demeris is my Pastor, trainer, and pretty much my everything. He showed me that a father is someone who uses their authority and position as a parent to guide, love and teach their child what love is under all circumstances. He saw me, a young boy, with no guidance from a man and did exactly what any man or decent father would do. He took me under his wing and showed me how.

In the recent years, I have also reconnected with my biological father.  We have a great relationship and I'm very thankful for that."

Thanks Pastor Demeris for your passion and inspiration. We hope you'll come back soon when your new book is published. Jesus loves you and so do we.

BWAP OVERVIEW & POSITIONAL STRUCTURE

BWAP - BROTHERS WITH A PURPOSE
Overview and Positional Structure

BWAP - Brothers With A Purpose
The long-term goal of the BWAP program is to teach young men how to be Christ-centered role models who mentor the next generation. By helping young men in this age group to build solutions to poverty and violence, they will help future generations avoid destructive life cycles that have plagued America's inner-cities.

BWAP Senior Game Plan
Each week the young men 16-30 yrs. old will play basketball from 7-8:15 pm. At approximately 8:15 pm, we call half-time and the young men move into another room to listen to a Life Direction Speaker. Each week a guest speaker will give a 9-minute talk on one or more of components of the YWAP Building Character program. The speech will only last 9 minutes and is called a 9MD - 9 Minute Direction. Possible speakers include: Business owners, Law Enforcement, Pastors, Teachers, College and Military Recruiters, Professional Athletes and young people who have been a part of the BWAP Character Program. The presentation is 9 minutes, but the guys are given the opportunity to enter into more personal discussions after the initial program. After the speaker is done food is served as a family meal. Any remaining time is then used during a return to the basketball court. Approximate duration of BWAP is 2.5 hrs.
As an extension of the relationships that we form with these young men, several relationship building activities occur each week. We offer weekly Bible studies called "YWAP Character Building for Coaches." Monthly birthday celebrations, opportunities to attend church and special events also happen each month.

BWAP XXXIV NOW SITS ON TOP OF THE BASKETBALL WORLD AT 34-0

1/18/2016

Basketball is like life, discipline in doing the fundamentals will help you avoid at-risk behavior. For the 34th consecutive week, BWAP remained undefeated as 9MD Speaker Rev. Will Coplin gave the young men some powerful life direction.
We actually had a doubleheader with 2 Life Direction Speakers. Pastor Doug Sukhia from the Armor Bible Church joined us as a special visitor. He gave the young men an opening dose of wisdom before Rev. Will took over for 9 minutes.
Armor Bible Church is one of our new supporters spiritually and we look forward to collaborating with them. BWAP is on the move helping young men create their own "life milestones." Rev. Will announced that in February we will begin teaching the "BWAP Game Plan for Greatness." The Game Plan will help young men to become prepared as mentors to the younger generation. The curriculum is based on leadership lessons from the Bible and the mentoring portion comes from the book, "Mentorology - Volume One, Building Your Mentorship."
Preparation is the key in getting inner-city young men 18-30 yrs. old ready to mentor the younger guys. Rev. Will is fond of telling the guys that they are destined for greatness. BWAP is preparing them to become mentors who guide young guys toward greatness as they build their way out of poverty and violence..

DWAP - DINNER WITH A PURPOSE - Sponsor Guidelines FOR BWAP DINNERS

1/15/2016

DINNER WITH A PURPOSE
"Training Mentors With Character.
Who Teach Children Leadership."

BWAP Dinner Sponsor Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in becoming a BWAP Dinner Sponsor. Young men's lives are being changed in a spectacular way at Basketball With A Purpose and we welcome your involvement as a BWAP Team Player. Your kindness is appreciated.
"for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink;
I was a stranger and you took Me in;" Matthew 25:35
Here is some brief information about our program and your involvement.
Who:    Inner-city young men in their middle teens to their early 30's.
What:   Purchase, prepare & serve a home style meal and form relationships with young men.
Where: Expressway Assembly 260 Eggert Road, Buffalo, NY
When:  As per the BWAP Schedule and your availability.
Why:    To help young men become good role models who disciple the next generation.

The Kitchen is a fairly modern kitchen with a large oven. We open the doors on Thursday evenings at 7pm. The young men play basketball until approximately 8:15 Pm. We then call Halftime and the guys are ushered into the Dining Room to hear a 9 Minute Life Direction called a 9MD. Every week we have a different speaker who gives some information and a character lesson. Hopefully they will bring a Bible verse but if they don't - WE WILL! If you need to arrive a little early, we will ask the church custodian if that's possible. Many times we will pre-cook the meals and heat them up although you are welcome to prepare the meal on site as time allows.
Our goal is to help the young men in the following areas:
  1. Prayer
  2. Education
  3. Employment
  4. Community Service
  5. Health & Welfare
  6. Personal Accountability
    • All young men in the BWAP (Basketball With A Purpose) program are asked to contribute a dollar upon their arrival, We ask you to do the same and give a dollar. We'd also ask you to go the extra mile and give a one dollar scholarship for any young guys who don't have a buck.
    • Please bring a friend with you so they can witness the positive things happening at BWAP.
    • We need you to give us a referral for another Dinner Sponsor. Who do you know that has a message and a heart to share some compassion with these young guys?
    • We will have several luncheons throughout the year to invite folks to get involved in BWAP, if you are able to attend and bring several friends, which would be awesome.
    • Pictures and a story about your BWAP Dinner Sponsorship will be posted on our website in the week following your act of kindness. www.youthwithapurpose.org.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions. Thank you for caring enough to make a difference in a young guy's life. We appreciate you.
Jesus loves you and so do we.

THE PRESSURE IS ON BWAP TO BREAK THE LAKERS ALL TIME RECORD

1/13/2016

Picture

BWAP XXXIV is scheduled for tomorrow night and the results could be more powerful than any blizzard to ever hit the City of Good Neighbors. Young men (and some ladies too!) between the ages of 18-30 converge on City Reach Buffalo to play same ball, listen to a 9 Minute Life Direction Speaker and enjoy a home style meal. Thursday marks the night that could break the Los Angeles Lakers all time unbeaten streak of 33 straight.
Will the BWAP streak ever end? If you haven't been following the exploits of BWAP in Buffalo, you may not be aware of one of the most spectacular programs ever to hit the neighborhoods of Buffalo. Witnesses have said that BWAP is unique, one-of-a-kind and it doesn't happen anywhere else.
Another reason that makes BWAP so special is the events that happen on other days of the week. There are Bible studies, birthday celebrations, job preparedness and many other kinds of one on one mentoring. This week the BWAP Director, Rev. Will Coplin is our 9MD Speaker.
Plenty of guys know Rev. Will as Grandpa. That's only because he has been mentoring - fathering many of the young men for over 35 years. Rev. Will Coplin was formerly with Urban Christian Ministries before becoming the BWAP Director. He's a Foster Dad, mentor, friend, Director, Teacher and a man of God. If you ask a young guy if Will loves him, he will give you an answer that's says yes with a mile long list of examples of that love.
Jesus loves you Will and so do we.

CHRISTINA FOSTER HELPS BWAP TIE THE LAKERS ALL TIME RECORD!

1/8/2016

Buffalo witnessed history last night as Christina Foster paved the way for BWAP XXXIII to continue their undefeated run. The crowd was larger than normal as the 18-30 yr. old inner-city young men were hungry for some BWAP time after 2 weeks off for the holidays. We also had a couple of ladies and under 18 guys show up and we loved it. They came ready for basketball and a life-lesson from Christina.
When we called halftime at 8:09 pm, it did not take long for the large crowd to leave the gym and enter the dining room. We are always amazed at the great attitudes of the BWAP guys. They don't argue about putting the ball down for a couple of minutes. Sometimes they actually ask if it's time for the "Speech."
A few minutes into her 9MD (9 Minute Devotion or Life-Direction) it was easy to see that Christina had the guys by their heart-strings. As you look at the pictures below, take a good look at their eyes. You can tell by their eyes that the guys were listening with their hearts. Christina is a very accomplished young lady who is the same age as many of our BWAP guys (and ladies.) She captivated the crowd with her smile, energy and wisdom. Christina has a great story of perseverance, overcoming and healing. Last night she changed lives with the words of her life.
Powerful stories can change lives but there is something more important that Christina did. She continually built relationships with everyone she met from the minute she walked in until the minute she walked out. After her speech, Christina went into the gym and just hung out with the BWAPpers. She took pictures, exchanged smiles and even tried her hand at some basketball - even while still wearing heels! Christina thank you from the bottom of our BWAP hearts. We appreciate you. Jesus loves you and so do we!
We'll post more about Christina's message next week, but for now please enjoy a great collection of photos that tell the Christina Foster - BWAP Story.

WILL CHRISTINA FOSTER HELP BWAP TIE THE LAKERS ALL-TIME RECORD?

1/6/2016

Picture
Believe it or not, BWAP has a shot at tying the Los Angeles Lakers all time streak of remaining unbeaten at 33. It was on January 7, 1972 that Wilt Chamberlain and friends ripped through the NBA with 33 straight victories. This Thursday, January 7, 2016 is 44th anniversary of that date. It also happens to be BWAP XXXIII or BWAP 33 if you're not too sharp on your Roman Numerals.
When we bring in a 9 Minute Speaker, we already know that they have something special to bring to our young guys. For BWAP to remain undefeated, we have to have a unique 9 Minute Speaker and it's happened for 32 straight weeks. This week another rock star from Buffalo will be our Speaker.
Another young lady is coming to share with her male peers.Christina Foster has been making a positive impact as a Mentor, a Mentor Trainer and a Mentor Recruiter in Buffalo. She is a one-person life changer. Her LinkedIn Page Profile lists her occupation as :ChristSIS Intervention Specialist & Purpose Developer at Bandage Control, Southwest Key Program. We just believe that Christina will bring her "A" Game and help BWAP tie the Lakers record.
Plenty of inner-city young guys could use a second chance at becoming self-sustaining and contributing members of society. If you think you might have a message that could impact the lives of inner-city young men from 18-30 yrs. old, please call us. We would love to have you as a BWAP Teammate! Would you like to play on an unbeaten team?

HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED IN BWAP?
SPONSORSHIP'S
1. ADOPT A BWAP DINNER - Each Thursday Night at Expressway Assembly we serve a Meal for BWAP. This is an excellent way for your church, youth group or community group to serve some young men from the inner-city. You bring the food and use our kitchen to prepare the food. Our numbers vary between 20 - 40 people each Thursday night.
2. BWAP Adoption - For only $5 per week, you can sponsor a young person from the inner-city between the ages of 18-30 yrs. old. For every $5, a young guy gets over 2 hrs of physical exercise through basketball, a 9MD (9 Minute Life Direction) and a home-style meal. We are a mentoring organization and everything we do is designed to create a more beneficial relationship. We help guys with their education, employment, community service, safe place to live and a relationship with God. Some guys also receive transportation to and from BWAP.
3. 9MD Speaker - If you have some wisdom to pass along to young guys then we would be happy to discuss how you might do that. You would come on a Thursday night and speak for 9 minutes. After your 9 minutes are up, you are welcome to form relationships with the guys as they eat an awesome meal.

    Bob Kuebler

Bob is a BWAP Director and an old school ball player. His dream was to play in the NBA, but somebody told him that NBA really meant
    "No Bob's Allowed."
Now he plays in a BWAP League teaching character on the basketball courts of life. JLYASDW
