Principal Cecelie Owens is a leader and a cheer leader! West Hertel Academy has shown improvement in their Test Scores for New York State and this is just the beginning. Today was a kickoff for West Hertel Academy taking itself to the next level of being a true Community School.
The good folks from Citizen Action were lead by Brian Trzeciak, Eve Shippens and Kristen Konrad Mendoza. Ms. Owens had to slow down only to allow the interpreters to catch up. There were folks who spoke Arabic, Burmese, Karen, Nepalese and more.. The students and their families are excited about new opportunities in a Buffalo School. There are great things happening in the Buffalo Schools!
Principal Owens hopped on her bike last week with a backpack full of flyers for today's event. She rode around with one of her trusted Teachers and delivered them personally to businesses in the area around West Hertel. One of the businesses was a Barber Shop. Andre Sanders is a Barber at "Twenty - One Studio" at 662 Hertel Avenue. He came to support the students. Now that's a class act! Andre has also agreed to be a 9MD Speaker for our BWAP Program at Youth With A Purpose. He will share his wisdom and life experience with the BWAP guys.
For the past 10 years, Youth With A Purpose has played role in many of the Buffalo Schools. YWAP concentrates on dropout and violence prevention while building purposeful relationships with students..
