Young people are 100% of the future. Education is a mountain they need to climb to see the Promised Land. An inner-city ministry called Youth With A Purpose (YWAP) has a program called BWAP or Basketball With A Purpose. On almost every Thursday evening in Buffalo, NY, inner-city young men gather to play ball, eat a good meal and listen to a nine minute guest speaker. Rev. Will Coplin came up with the "nine minute" idea because; "The average young person takes about nine minutes to eat a meal. We should be able to give them a spiritual meal in nine minutes."
Where each nine minute speaker has come from is the top of one of the seven mountains; Religion, Family, Education, Government, Media, Arts & Entertainment and Business. Every week the young men are given the opportunity to hear from folks who have overcome adversity through perseverance. The wisdom borne through that travailing perseverance becomes the seed of character wealth in young men. Future YWAP Coaches are trained in a Bible Leadership Program called the Game Plan for Greatness. We train 18-30 yr. old inner-city young men as mentors who will help 5th -8th Graders build their way out of poverty and violence.
Accountability at Youth With A Purpose means strengthening communities by investing in young men. BWAP or Basketball With A Purpose is a unique program that turns inner-city young men into mentors for the younger generation. Gang members are putting their guns down and becoming self sustaining and contributing members of society. Imagine a city where 18-30 yr. old young men are becoming good character role models who begin mentoring high school and grade school students. Poverty and violence would drop dramatically and we would have a lot less of our young guys dying or going to jail. We teach them how to take fatherhood seriously and respect women. A city will change, time is of the essence.
Partnering with fellow climbers on the mountains of life, we invite them to collaborate with us for a short time. We call this collaboration: "Nine Minutes On Seven Mountains." Each mountain has a trail head, a highpoint and several false summits along the way. The secret to a successful mountain trek on any one of the seven mountains is a trust-able mountain guide.
