Absentee fatherhood is a term synonymous with the inner city. Children grow up without the paternal guidance of a loving father who teaches them respect and guides them with discipline. Instilling a paternal instinct in young men is a good thing. Guiding them through paternalism is destructive to the whole community. Paternalism is doing for others what they are capable of doing for themselves. God has established the work of our hands. He did not establish the work of our hands to be the work of another person's hands.
Poverty alleviation that gives away handouts has little positive effect on the community. There are times when we need to give material goods to supply an immediate need. In most cases, however, people have the means to help themselves and refuse to do so because they know that we will do it for them. This creates laziness that becomes a generational laziness. All of us are to blame because we have been a part of the enabling process.
There are many assets in the inner city. The new road for YWAP will include doing a better job of identifying the assets and doing our best to help connect assets in a manner that will benefit the whole community. YWAP helps children overcome the mindset of poverty and violence.
Thanks for your time. Go do something nice for somebody.
